Why a Second Oliver Book?
Searching for Oliver K. Woodman
When The Journey of Oliver K. Woodman received two starred reviews, I took my daughter for a walk. We talked about Oliver’s story and my idea for a second story. I wrote that book in three days and sent it in. It was accepted almost immediately.
In this story, Oliver again sets out to cross the country. But this time, he gets lost. For a long time. For over 90 days.
His friends are very worried. They enlist the help of a newspaper reporter, but still no word. Finally, Uncle Ray decides to send out a private investigator to find Oliver - a wooden woman.
Imogene Poplar, P.I. is the detective that chases after Oliver as they cross the northern US, take a ferry to Alaska and wind up in Barrow, Alaska, the “top of the world,” out on the tundra together, watching the Northern Lights.
For a slightly older audience, this story is great for transportation units and as a model for kids as they write a mystery story, especially if it includes a chase scene.
